I’m very glad that I’ve studied and practiced guitar for so many years, but these days it is much more a tool than a passion. The kind of excitement I’ve had about guitar over the years is the kind of excitement that I now have for songwriting and recording. I get much more of a rush creating the entire song rather than just the guitar part. It’s a lot more rewarding for me to come up with the guitar part, bass line, lyrics, vocal melody/phrasing, drum patterns, synth/key parts, and that’s only the writing end of it. I also love recording and figuring out how to make it sound as professional and as high quality as I can. Choosing the right delays, reverbs, compressors, drum sounds and guitar tones is as enjoyable to me as playing lead guitar ever was. I realize now that I approach all of my interests the same way and that I become completely obsessed and nothing is ever good enough and I’m never satisfied. But, I’ve learned to like that aspect of myself because it makes me want to learn more and improve.
I’m always on high alert wating for a lyrical or musical idea to hit me and my favorite part is trying to record the song that’s in my head.
